Last week's event was really fun, informative, and had a great turnout despite it being held on a Friday evening. Students in attendance were able to listen to panelists from the University of San Francisco School of Law, the University of San Diego School of Law, Southwestern Law School, Santa Clara Law School, and Chapman University School of Law as they gave advice about preparing for the LSAT and applying to law school in addition to finding emphasis programs that would best fit them. The students also had many opportunities to ask the panelists for personal advice and opinions about their concerns of becoming a law student and later on, a lawyer. The event was an utter success!

At our Minorities in Law Panel last week, members of the community received an inside look at the perspectives of one practicing and two previously practicing lawyers that navigated the field of law with motivation despite setbacks due to their ethnic backgrounds. Mr. Tabo, Professor Joe, and Professor Lin's discussion introduced varying aspects of the field of law; whether it is single practice, partnership or even teaching the future lawyers of our generation.
To raise awareness about our organization as well as allow our members to get to know each other better, we occasionally host socials. In this movie night social, members and non-members enjoyed pizza while watching a film.
Every quarter, we host social events that anyone can attend. As finals were upcoming, we hosted a study lounge event where students had a quiet study space as well as complimentary refreshments and test-taking materials. Events, as always, are free, and we hope to see you at our next event!
In addition to providing law school-related information, the Pre-Law Association works with the ASUCD Office of Advocacy and Student Representation, AB540 & Undocumented Student Center at UC Davis, and the University of California Undocumented Legal Services Center. An open space was hosted for students to voice and discuss their legal concerns with Amy Barnett, an Attorney Fellow at UCD. Barnett answered and provided advice for DACA, Advance Parole, safety planning, and other concerns.
Thank you to Alexis Elston, Assistant Director of Admissions at UC Davis Law School, for speaking about how to write a successful resume and personal statement! There were a lot of great questions about the do's and don'ts for a successful application. A friendly reminder that the UC Davis King Hall Law School is free this year! Make sure to apply- you have nothing to lose!
A free LSAT seminar and free In-N-Out: a great way to study for the LSAT! The Blueprint representative gave students a sample of the LSAT's varying questions, and answered any questions the students had as well.
During weeks 1 and 2 of Fall Quarter 2016, we held 3 information sessions for new students interested in getting involved with Pre-Law Association, closing our board member applications after the last session. We enjoyed getting to know all the new folks who will be joining us for future events!
The Pre-Law Association’s panel consisted of a talented and accomplished set of individuals. Throughout the panel, there was continuous dialogue between the students and the panelists. Panelists consisted of Professor Anupam Chander, Professor Jasmine E. Harris, Assistant Dean of Admissions Kristen Mercado, Duke University 1L David Kuwabara, and incoming USC law student Naz Etemad. Students gathered both personal experiences and professional opinions on almost all aspects of applying for law school and attending law school, including the LSAT. For the second half of the event, Dean Kristen Mercado provided insightful tips on how to write a personal statement and what to include in one’s resume. Thank you to everyone who attended, and we hope to see you all attend future PLA events in the upcoming school year.
Members of the YOLO County CASA came and spoke about their personal experiences and insights in their advocacy for foster youths. Along with tips and advice, they informed those at the event about the process of becoming involved-from the application to the orientation, to the duration of the process. CASA is always looking for volunteers, and hopes that there are those who are interested in being committed to helping a youth.
